This story is about a group of monsters that have a sports day. I'm going to my daughter's sports day next week and really looking forward to it. It will be the last one as she leaves primary school this July. I keep telling her to stop growing so fast.
This is a picture book story so there isn't a lot of descriptive text, the illustrator would add lots of wonderful detail. You could print the story out and ask your child to draw pictures of the monsters. Hope you enjoy this!
The Monsters' Sports Day
It was the Monsters' Sports Day. Kip was excited, "I hope I win something this year."
Kip didn't look like the other monsters. He was small and he only had one head.
The skipping race was first. The monsters rushed towards the pile of ropes. When Kip got there all the ropes had gone.
"Ready ... steady... go!"
"Wait! I haven't got a rope!" Kip called.
But no one heard Kip's little voice.
The slime throwing race was next.
"Ready...steady...throw!"
Kip threw his slime as hard as he could.
SPLAT!
The slime landed on an enormous monster in front of him.
"Oops! Sorry," Kip muttered.
The enormous monster growled, picked Kip up and threw him high into the air. Kip landed in a tree.
As Kip looked down at the sports field he said, "This isn't a good start. I must be good at something. I'll just have to keep trying."
Kip climbed down the tree and headed towards the sports field.
Kip was prepared for the next race.
"I've got my egg and spoon ready," he said as he stood at the starting line.
"Ready...steady...go!"
The other monsters raced off. They rushed and dropped their eggs.
Kip walked slowly and carefully.
"I think I'm going to win!" he smiled.
Kip was almost at the finish line when ...
CRACK!
The egg hatched. A tiny dinosaur popped out of the egg.
"Hello," the dinosaur smiled. Then it jumped out of the egg and ran away.
Kip sighed, "I can't win the egg and spoon race without an egg."
Kip entered all the other races. He came last in the swamp jump. Last in the rotten tree hurdles. And last in the smelly sock eating contest.
The final race was the obstacle race.
"I've got to win this," Kip was determined.
"Ready...steady...go!"
Kip raced off. He was just the right size for the obstacles.
Through the tunnel. Across the bridge. Under the ropes.
Kip zoomed towards the finishing line.
"I'm going to win!" he yelled.
"Help! Help!"
Kip skidded to a halt and looked behind him.
"Those silly monsters have got stuck! They've got too many arms and heads,"
Kip stared at the monster mess.
Kip was near to the finish line. He looked at the line. He looked back at the monster mess.
"I can't leave them," Kip said and he ran back towards the tangled monsters.
Kip untied arms and legs. He untwisted heads and feet. The freed monsters ran towards the finishing line. Kip watched sadly as a green fluffy monster won the race.
"Never mind. I'll try again next year," Kip sighed. He sat down to watch the winners' prizes being handed out by Mrs Grumpybot.
"We have a special prize this year," Mrs Grumpybot began.
"For me! I was the fastest!" yelled a spiky monster.
"It's for me! I won the most races," a spotty monster shouted.
Mrs Grumpybot glared. "It's not for you. It's for the monster who tried his hardest in every race. He even lost a race because he chose to help his friends instead. This special prize goes to ...KIP!"
Kip was too shocked to move. The other monsters cheered and clapped.
"Come up here, Kip, and collect your prize," Mrs Grumpybot said.
Kip collected a huge trophy that was bigger than him!
"Thank you so much," Kip smiled. He smiled so much that his cheeks hurt. "I'm
the happiest monster in the world."
