I must apologise for not writing on my blog for a while. I have been doing a lot of research for my Leeds history book. I've got a deadline coming up soon so I have to get it finished. I've found out some wonderful facts about Leeds. The most gruesome is that during the early 1800s there was a lady called Mary Bateman, who was known as the Yorkshire Witch. She was found guilty of poisoning Rebecca Perigo (a poisoned pudding made with arsenic!) and was sentenced to death. To raise money for a new hospital Mary's body was disected in public. Her skin was tanned and given to people who could make donations for the new hospital. What a horrible souvenir! I wonder if any pieces are left today. Perhaps someone might find a bottle, open it and the evil spirit of Mary would once again torment the people of Leeds ....
A lovely tale now about the stone lions that guard the front of Leeds Town Hall. A fable states that when the Town Hall bell strikes thirteen the people of Leeds stop moving and the stone lions come alive. The lions prowl around the city to make sure everything is as it should be. Then they return to the Town Hall. The clock strikes again and people are able to move again. I can just imagine the adventures the stone lions could go on....perhaps they would have to chase the Yorkshire Witch out of town.
I must say thank to the Brownies in Morley who sent me these lovely thank you cards following my visit to them recently.

Thank you, Brownies, these are wonderful!
