Writing Tip 1

This is my favourite writing tip - read, read and read some more!

I've always loved reading and would spend all day doing this if I could. I also love going to book shops and wandering around in a happy daze being tempted by all the wonderful books on the shelves.

A  little girl I spoke to once told me, "I like to read so that I can fill up my head with ideas."

It's important to read the books from the genre you want to write for. I read a lot of picture books and I also read the reviews on Amazon to see why customers like certain books.

Don't stick to the same authors or types of books - try something different. You can experiment on new authors at the library. I do this quite often and have found lots of books that make me read long into the night, "I'll just read one more page and then I'll turn the light off..."

If a book is boring you then don't feel you have to read it to the end. Your time is too precious and there are many brilliant books out there for you to read instead. The author will not coming knocking at your door and demand to know why you never finished his work of art. I once read (the first half) of an award winning book and I wasn't impressed at all. Not all books appeal to all people.

Read books that are meant for children - they are great fun! I am reading the latest Jiggy McCue story and sniggering quite a lot at the childish humour. The Jiggy McCue stories are great if you have a child that's reluctant to read. I'd also recommend the Wimpy Kid series.

If you know of any brillant books that you think I might like please let me know. If you have any writing tips that you wish to share I would be delighted to hear from you.

I'll leave you with a terrible writing joke : Never write on a Saturday or Sunday - your story will have a weekending.

Waterstone's Book Signing

I had a great time at Waterstone's, Leeds signing copies of my books. Thank you to all the people who bought them. A big thank  you to Amy who works in the children's department and who kept me company.

I had a lovely moment when a little boy ran into the shop and raced straight over to my table. I soon realised that he was racing towards the fish tank that was situated behind me. He gave me a look that clearly said I was in the way.

We didn't have as many customers as we hoped because there was a major football match going on a few miles up the road - congratulations Leeds United!

My daughter came with me to the book signing. She had a wonderful time browsing the shelves and bought 4 books.

We're just about to go out to celebrate my other daughter's birthday - 15! Why do children have to grow so quickly? I keep telling them not to.

Hula Hooping

I've just been to vote. It was lovely to see so many people turn out to vote. We will see who the government is tomorrow!

I work at a local school as a teaching assistant and I had an interesting time today watching the children play with hula hoops in the playground :

"This is my train. Get in, we're off!"  Child behind screams, "Arghhh! Slow down!"

"You're my prisioner. Get in there and don't move."

"This is my power laser, I'm going to get you!"  "No! My power laser is stronger than yours!"

"I'm in charge of the hoops. You can buy one for a pound," child with hand outstretched.

"Miss! Look! Everytime I throw my hoop in the air it hits someone!" child giggles.

"Yes, I know," me, as I rub my shin.

Some children even hula hooped with their hoops.

Children have such great imaginations and that's why I like writing stories for them. I must go, my hula hoop space rocket is ready to take me to Mars.

Welcome to my new site

Hello and welcome to my new site!

You can now buy signed books direct from here and I can dedicate them to the person who will receive the book.

I will soon be posting writing tips, both for adults and children and sharing some of the lessons I have learnt during my years of writing. One thing I can share now is to always picture your success. Before I was published I used to visit my local W H Smiths and dream about the day when they would stock my book. I even located the place on the shelf where my book would be placed. For years I dreamt about this and every time I went to the shop I would think "That's where my book will go." That finally happened today! I found 2 copies of You Can't Eat A Princess! on the shelf just waiting to be bought. I helpfully moved them into a more visible position.  Any writers out there - if you can picture your success in your mind then you can achieve it.

I'd like to say a big thank you to Tom and everyone at Arka Design who have set up my new site. Thank you for answering all my questions, I'm sure I'll have more!
